Online Blackjack Basics

The number one thing to remember in blackjack is that you are trying to beat the dealer. Many novice players fall into the trap of simply aiming for 21. This approach won’t get you very far. Get closer to 21 than the dealer and you’ll win your bet.

It takes minutes to learn the card values. All cards are worth their number value, except the ace which can be either 1 or 11, and face cards are all worth 10. A hand of blackjack is played as follows:

A Winning Blackjack Strategy

Don’t play blind. Follow some simple guidelines and you’ll be playing like a pro in no time.

Blackjack has hard and soft hands. A hard hand is where the total value of the cards is fixed. For example, a jack and a five can only be worth 15. A soft hand contains an ace. Since the ace can be worth either 1 or 11, the value of this hand isn’t fixed. For instance, an ace and a seven is worth either 8 or 18.

Now that we’ve understood that important concept, let’s look at some strategies you can use at online blackjack sites.

Stand on hard 17 or more. Better to stay here than risk going bust.
Hit on hard 11 or less. You’ll never beat the dealer if you stand.
For other hands, consult the dealer’s card. For example, if the dealer has 6 or less, and you have 13 or more, stand. Consult a strategy chart for the best move in any situation.
Split eights and aces, but never tens. The guidelines on splitting other number pairs depend on the dealer’s card, but mathematically it’s always better to split aces and eights.
You can choose to double your bet after the initial deal, but then you have to take one more card and stand. Doubling is not for beginners. Once you’ve been playing for a while, you’ll get a feel for when it’s a good idea to double your wager.
