Online Blackjack Basics

The number one thing to remember in blackjack is that you are trying to beat the dealer. Many novice players fall into the trap of simply aiming for 21. This approach won’t get you very far. Get closer to 21 than the dealer and you’ll win your bet.

It takes minutes to learn the card values. All cards are worth their number value, except the ace which can be either 1 or 11, and face cards are all worth 10. A hand of blackjack is played as follows:

Time Required: 5 minutes  | Tools Required: Mobile or computer  | Funds Required: As much as you wish to deposit
Step 1

Place your Bet

This is the riskiest part because you have no way of knowing what cards will be dealt.

Step 2

Receive your Cards

You’ll be dealt two cards. The dealer will also have two cards, one displayed and another face down.

Step 3

Decide your Move

Stand, hit, split or double. Some also allow you to surrender and half your bet will be returned to you.

A Winning Blackjack Strategy

Don’t play blind. Follow some simple guidelines and you’ll be playing like a pro in no time.

Blackjack has hard and soft hands. A hard hand is where the total value of the cards is fixed. For example, a jack and a five can only be worth 15. A soft hand contains an ace. Since the ace can be worth either 1 or 11, the value of this hand isn’t fixed. For instance, an ace and a seven is worth either 8 or 18.

Now that we’ve understood that important concept, let’s look at some strategies you can use at online blackjack sites.

  • Stand on hard 17 or more. Better to stay here than risk going bust.
  • Hit on hard 11 or less. You’ll never beat the dealer if you stand.
  • For other hands, consult the dealer’s card. For example, if the dealer has 6 or less, and you have 13 or more, stand. Consult a strategy chart for the best move in any situation.
  • Split eights and aces, but never tens. The guidelines on splitting other number pairs depend on the dealer’s card, but mathematically it’s always better to split aces and eights.
  • You can choose to double your bet after the initial deal, but then you have to take one more card and stand. Doubling is not for beginners. Once you’ve been playing for a while, you’ll get a feel for when it’s a good idea to double your wager.

How much are cards worth?

🃏 2 to 10 are worth their numerical value

🃏 Jack, Queen and King are all worth 10

🃏 Ace is worth either 1 or 11

Blackjack Table Chart

We have created a blackjack table chart that will guide you if you should Stand, Hit, Double, or Split. These are just suggestions and obviously there is an element of luck in play. Try it out in our free games and see if you like these suggestions.

Blackjack History

17th Century
The first reference to the game

The first ever reference to blackjack came in a Spanish tale, Rinconete y Cortadillo . Some even say that the game dates back to the time of the ancient Egyptians.

18th Century
Theory that it originated in France

Another theory of its origins is that of the French game known as Vingt-et-Un . References to this game can be found in the book Round Games with Cards by Baxter Wray where the popularity of this game is described.

21st Centruy
Gradually spread around France and Spain

Regardless of its origins, blackjack spread both in France and Spain, and then migrated to the US where it was referred to as twenty-one.

Online Blackjack FAQ

💡 What is the goal of blackjack?

This is simple! You need to try to get cards to make a total as close as possible to 21, without exceeding it. Also, you need to have a higher final hand than the dealer to actually win. The dealer will give out the cards and the players need to choose to either keep taking more cards or stop at their current amount.

💡 What do I need to be able to play blackjack?

You will need a computer or a mobile phone as well as a good internet connection. You will then have to download the casino’s software or play at online blackjack casinos that offer web-based platforms.

💡 Can I play blackjack for free?

Absolutely! Most casinos that offer real money games also offer free blackjack games. You can use this to get used to the game, test your strategies and have fun without risking any of your money. However, you can’t keep any of the winnings gained while playing for free.

💡 What are the most common abbreviations in blackjack?

The most common blackjack abbreviations include:

  • BSE: Basic Strategy Edge, getting better odds by using your basic strategy
  • DOA: Double Down on any of your initial cards
  • D10/11: You can double down only on 10s and 11s
  • DAS: Double down is only allowed when you split a pair
  • ESR: Early Surrender allowed, surrender initial hand when the dealer has a natural blackjack
  • H17: When the dealer has 17 he must hit
  • LSR: Late surrender, surrender and only loss half of your bet when the dealer has a natural blackjack
  • O/U: Bet over and under 13
  • RSA: Re-split Aces
  • S17: Dealer must stick on 17

💡 Are blackjack games rigged?

No! All reputable online casinos use the same rules of blackjack as any brick-and-mortar casino and are heavily regulated to ensure fairness and random number generations. Check out our list above for the recommended and  reputable blackjack casinos.

💡 Can I count card when playing blackjack online?

Yes, but it might be difficult because of the speed that the computer plays at. Online casinos will automatically re-shuffle the decks between every hand.

💡 How can I win at blackjack?

This is all down to luck. You can always increase your chances of winning by testing out new strategies and applying them to the game.
